The International Maritime Organization approved the changes to the busiest sea lanes, including the approaches to San Francisco Bay and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

These areas are on the migratory routes of the blue whale, the humpback and fin whales, species in danger of extinction.

The changes, which take effect next year once the U.S. Coast Guard has developed standards, including the diversion of vessels feeding areas for animals and narrowing of other ways.

Five whales were killed in accidents with boats in an area outside of San Francisco in 2010.

Experts say similar adjustments adopted in Canada to protect whales have been successful.
